Aromatherapy - How does it work?

Aromatherapy is an ancient science, which has been used throughout history in the medical practices of the world's great civilisations. It evolved out of the herbalism of the middle ages, but in fact aromatic plants have been used in religious ceremonies and for medical purposes since the time of the Egyptians. Essential oils are the aromatherapist's tools of trade. They are pure essences extracted from the roots, flowers and leaves of plants and have their own unique properties based on complex chemical structures. Massage is the most effective medium of application for essential oils. They are diluted in a vegetable carrier oil before being used. The skin, the body's largest organ, absorbs them and then distributes them via the circulatory and lymphatic systems. Specific massage techniques for the face and body will be taught which combine shiatsu pressure points and lymphatic drainage. Other methods of application will also be discussed. This treatment is recognised by orthodox and complimentary health professionals to be one of the most beneficial natural therapies. Aromatherapy makes use of two of the senses, smell and touch; at its lowest level it is simply a pleasant experience, but the essential oils have medicinal uses, being anti microbial and anti viral, some rivalling antibiotic drugs in their effectiveness. Some essential oils are better for relieving stress related disorders, others stimulate or uplift, while other soothe and calm. The deep sense of relaxation which commonly results from aromatherapy treatments encourages a balancing effect on an emotional level, enabling the body to heal.
